University of Hull move dates, 2026 to 2027
Hull doesn't run on the usual three terms. The university works in trimesters, so the busy weeks for student moves fall in places people don't expect. Here are this year's dates, and when vans tend to get booked up.
The year at a glance
- Welcome Week: Monday 21 to Friday 25 September 2026.
- Trimester one: 21 September 2026 to 31 January 2027. Teaching runs from 28 September to 18 December, the winter break from 21 December to 10 January, and assessments from 11 to 22 January.
- Trimester two: 1 February to 30 May 2027. The spring break is 22 March to 4 April, and assessments run from 10 to 28 May.
- Trimester three: 31 May to 5 September 2027.
When the vans get busy
The weekend before Welcome Week
Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 September 2026 are likely to be the busiest two days of the year for moving into halls and shared houses, and vans go fast. If that's you, book as early as you can, and think about the Friday or the Monday instead, when it's quieter.
The end of January
Assessments finish on Friday 22 January. Some students switch houses at the turn of the trimester, and some leave for good. It's nowhere near September, but it's worth booking a few days ahead.
The end of May and into summer
Assessments end on Friday 28 May 2027, and the weekend after is a big one for going home. Plenty of student tenancies in Hull end over the summer as well, so look at the end date on your contract and book for a day or two before it, not the last afternoon.
Halls and shared houses
Halls usually give you an arrival slot, and the van may not be able to stop right outside the door. Have everything boxed or bagged before the driver turns up, and know which entrance and which lift you're using.
Shared houses around Newland Avenue, Cottingham Road, Beverley Road and the Avenues are mostly on terraced streets, where parking is tight and some front doors can't be reached by van at all. The parking guide explains what to sort out before the day.
How much van you need
A room in halls, with bedding, a few boxes, a desk chair and a monitor, fits easily in a Medium van. A room in a shared house with a bed, a chest of drawers and a bike might need a Large van. If two housemates are going the same way on the same day, one van and one booking is often cheaper than two. How you split it is up to you.
Booking a student move
- Use the full postcodes for both ends. A hall's general postcode can be a long walk from your block.
- Pick a loading time that fits the stairs. A third-floor room with no lift takes far longer than a ground-floor one with the same amount of stuff.
- Bags and boxes you can carry on your own go in quicker than loose things. Supermarket crates and big laundry bags are fine.
- If you're not at home on the day, tell your driver who will be, and leave them a number on the booking.
Going home for the summer
Plenty of Hull moves are long runs out of the area, up the A1 or over to Lancashire and the rest of Yorkshire. The driving is counted in the price, so the loading time you pick is the bit you control. Have it all ready by the door and you can book less time.
